Of all the arguments in favor of abortion, the most heartless and grotesque are those that suggest that unborn children would be better off dead than dealing with difficulties in life.
But on her MSNBC show on Saturday morning, Tiffany Cross trotted a [false and misleading] statistic with the implication that some or all of the supposedly 17 million “hungry” children in America would have been better off having had an abortion.
Said Cross:
“A person’s ability to choose to bring life into this world is their choice. But in America, where guns are the leading cause of death for children, an AR-15 has more rights than a woman. And now the Supreme Court wants to mandate births in a country where 17 million children are starving, and more than 420,000 children are in foster care.”

First, look at Cross’s absurd argument that AR-15s have more rights than women. Inanimate objects have no rights. Rather, the Second Amendment recognizes the right of people to have and bear weapons.
Let’s focus on Cross’ mention of those 17 million children who are supposedly “hungry.” Does she mean to suggest that many, if not all, would be better off never being born? Given a vote, how many of those 17 million do you think would most like to live, even if life comes with some challenges?
And then there’s Cross’s fraudulent claim that 17 million children in America are “starving.” That means there are so many hungry kids at any given time.
Cross must know that’s not true. “Hunger insecurity” has been confused with real hunger by activists. It just means that a family was concerned about meeting nutritional needs at some point in the year. It doesn’t mean that anyone has ever been hungry, let alone that everyone is hungry daily.
In fact, for children in low-income families, obesity is a much bigger problem than hunger. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, “seven times as many (low-income) children are obese as are underweight.”
Cross has made another false and misleading statement. She claimed the Supreme Court wants to “impose birth.”
No. The Court’s ruling in no way requires women to give birth. It simply acknowledged the indisputable fact that the Constitution did not create a right to abortion and thus that individual states are free to legislate on it.
Cross seemed to imply that the Court’s ruling would “mandatory birth” by repealing state laws that allow abortion. That’s not true at all. Suppose indeed, as Cross claimed, a majority of Americans were against the overthrow of Roe. In that case, it could be because many were getting false and misleading information about it from people like Cross.
And finally, Cross again resorted to her store-worn slur on Judge Amy Comey Barrett. Cross opened the show by welcoming viewers to ‘Gilead’ and besmirching the brilliant and talented Barrett as a ‘Handmaiden’.
