Marco Rubio criticizes Merrick Garland for not investigating violence against pro-life groups

Attorney General Merrick Garland was criticized Friday for not doing enough to protect U.S. Supreme Court justices and pro-life lawyers from the growing threat of violence from radical abortion activists.

In a letter, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, R-Florida, asked Garland how his agency is responding to the escalating violence, especially after authorities reported an assassination attempt on Judge Brett Kavanaugh near his home this week.

“Violent acts like this should come as no surprise given that the threats outside the judges’ homes were the very cause of concern we referenced by asking the DOJ to hold these bad actors accountable,” Rubio wrote in his follow-up letter. A DC Examiner journalist shared the letter on Twitter. Friday.

At least three pro-life organizations have been victims of arson in recent weeks, and dozens of acts of vandalism, attacks, and threats against pro-lifers and churches.

Rubio asked Garland why his department has failed to investigate acts of violence against pro-life maternity centers and other organizations and whether the department will classify the crimes as domestic terrorism. He also wanted to know if Garland is working with other federal agencies to investigate the escalating violence.

“The DOJ must protect the integrity of the Court and the rights and freedoms of pro-life organizations,” Rubio wrote.

Last month, the Florida legislature also wrote a letter asking Garland to “publicly condemn and investigate the continued and unlawful attempts to intimidate Supreme Court justices, including by ‘protesters’ who threaten their homes outside their homes following the leak.” have expressed…”

While Garland and the Biden administration have condemned the violence, they have not condemned protests outside the judges’ homes since Politico reported on a leaked draft ruling the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade this summer. Federal law prohibits protests outside the homes of judges, witnesses, jurors, and court officials; such actions are considered harassment and interference with the justice system.

Rubio quoted former White House press secretary Jen Psaki as asking whether President Joe Biden is still “encouraging” protests “outside the homes of judges” in light of the recent reports.

Many call on the U.S. House to pass a bill to improve federal protections for Supreme Court justices and their families. The Senate approved the bill in May with bipartisan support, but Rubio said House Democrat leaders, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have “prevented” the legislation.

“This kind of partisan politics by the House leadership has paralyzed critical judicial security measures and increased the DOJ’s responsibility for enforcing federal law,” Rubio told Garland, urging him to “commit to investigating and prosecuting criminal actors who have answered the call to violence.”

A pro-abortion group, Ruth Sent Us, raised more alarm this week when it named the young children of two Supreme Court justices and posted a photo on Twitter of some of them going to school with a warning about their “safety.” The same group published the judges’ home addresses online in May.

Other pro-abortion groups have called for churches, especially Catholic churches, to be targeted by abortion activists’ outrage.

According to Axios, a recent Department of Homeland Security report warned that radical abortion activists could burn down or storm the Supreme Court building and kill judges and their clerks if the court overthrows Roe. The report indicates that these pro-abortion extremists also plan to attack churches and other places of worship.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health abortion case in Mississippi this summer, possibly later this month.

Since Roe in 1973, more than 63 million unborn babies and hundreds of mothers have died in supposedly “safe, legal” abortions.
